Council should 'recognise link between poor housing and poor health'
Healthwatch Hackney has urged the council to fully recognise the link between poor housing and poor mental and physical health in future housing plans.
In our response to Hackney Council’s housing strategy consultation, Healthwatch Hackney provided evidence that poor and inappropriate housing is damaging the health of vulnerable residents.
Drawing on patient experiences, we set out recommendations on how better housing could improve health of local residents with long term conditions and mental health needs.
Our recommendations included making a clear link between housing and health; ensuring vulnerable residents are appropriately and safely housed and building more quality supported accommodation.
We called for homeless patients discharged from psychiatric wards to be offered appropriate housing and for housing to be embedded in new plans for integrated health and care commissioning in Hackney.
