Hackney's community dental service changes hands
A community dental service which provides dentistry to vulnerable adults and children in Hackney is to be run by an NHS trust in Kent from April.
The service currently run by Barts NHS Trust, will continue to operate out of St Leonard's Hospital when Kent Community Health NHS Trust takes over the contract.
Community dental services are mainly used by disabled children, young people and adults who struggle to access mainstream dentisry as well as patients with complex medical issues requiring specialised dental treatment.
It also provides services to people who are housebound, homeless or who have substance misuse needs.
Local patients can be referred to the service by a healthcare professional including high street dentists.
NHS England commissioned the new service as part of a London-wide commissioning exercise to standardise community dental services across the capital.
Kent Community Health NHS Trust won the contract to deliver services in City and Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham.
