Influential think tanks cast doubt on likely success of NHS overhaul
Two new reports from separate influential think tanks have cast doubt on the ability of NHS sustainability and transformation plans (STPs) to tackle problems in NHS and social care services.
The Nuffield Trust’s report Shifting the Balance of Care: Great Expectations warns that moving care out of hospitals will be ‘extremely difficult to realise’ without additional investment in community support and workforce.
The trust report cautions that NHS bodies frequently overstate the economic benefits of shifting care out of hospital.
A new King’s Fund report questions if the England-wide NHS cost-cutting plans can close the ‘yawning gap’ in public satisfaction between the NHS and social care services.
Their report based on trends from the latest British Social Attitudes Survey said that while overall public satisfaction with the NHS stands at 63%, satisfaction with social care services is ‘shockingly low’ at 26%.
